The Peer Group Mentoring Program is a radical approach for supporting landowners who want to grow trees. It is built on the sound tradition that farmers learn from other farmers. The idea involves training, then supporting landholders to talk to other landholders about their tree growing and farm management plans.
“I now understand the potential of the plantation timber and have the knowledge to get the best value out of it by managing the thinning and pruning.” Liz
An initial site visit involving 2 or 3 experienced local tree growers generates ideas and helps the farmer prioritise their plans. Landholders receive a written report on the issues and opportunities identified. At least one of the mentors maintains contact with the landholder as they design and implement their project.
“I now have the contacts, awareness and confidence that I need to be able to get on with my tree projects in the future.” R Coffey
The Peer Group Mentor Program encourages and supports landholders to plan, establish and manage trees and shrubs for the reasons which are important to them. Mentors are not consultants, instead they provide a sounding board for farmers to explore ideas and develop their own plans.
“It is really good to know that all the mentors are available to us if and when needed.” S Hick
Getting started can be daunting. Our mentors can work with the landholder to plan the layout of trees, prepare tree
orders, organise site preparation and show them how to plant, guard, prune, thin or even harvest trees.
“They helped us consider some new concepts for the property such as; open spaces, functional areas and visual corridors.” S McKenzie

“We knew we wanted to plant trees but didn’t know how to go about it. Now we do. This Project has been very positive for us.” T Ellis
